According to the 2001 census of India, the total urban population of children less than six years of age in Bangalore is around 7.7 lakhs. The gradual increase in the IT population in the last decade has resulted in a significant increase in the affordability levels of the urban middle class in Bangalore. With the growing affordability levels of the urban middle class, the increasing trend of working parents and the changing family structures towards smaller families, there is an ever-increasing need for good quality day time childcare. Given this scenario, we posit that there is a very good opportunity for Childcare as a business in Bangalore. In this research, we plan to study the Childcare industry as it exists in Bangalore right now, the growth that has happened in this sector over the last few years, and analyze its market potential. This research report is an analysis to test this hypothesis. Through this research, we have tried to collect data, through surveys, available literature and extensive interviews. We have made an attempt analyze the data and determine the characteristics of the childcare industry in Bangalore and its market potential. The hope is that while this paper itself will serve mainly to understand the market potential of the childcare industry in Bangalore, the survey and focus interview data will also contain information that should help anyone who wishes to enter this industry as a new player.
