dc.description.abstract | India is one of the few countries in the world where publishing industry is still on a positive growth path. Most of the other countries in the world has seen the readers move on to other mediums of communication eBooks, Web, videos, audiobooks, etc. The Indian readers, a large percentage of which is millennial, is also catching up with the trends in rest of the world. If the Indian publishers do not reinvent their businesses soon enough, they may be too late to react. The publishing business spans across wide verity of genres: Fiction; Non-Fiction, Educational, Reference; Children s etc. In this report we specifically focus on the educational publication business; and within that look particularly at competitive exam related publications. Competitive exam publications, which include publications for exam preparation and exam practice is possibly facing a larger existential threat from changing environment compared to rest of the publication industry. The environment has changed dramatically in the last 15 years:1. Competitive Exams: Many major competitive exams already use the Computer Adaptive Tests or will soon move to it.2. IT Infrastructure: Power, internet connectivity and availability of test terminals is no longer an issue for implementing computerized online tests.3. Millennial Students: Today s students have all grown up with computers and mobile phones. These devices are essential parts of their lives. Mobile apps, online references, videos, social networks etc. are deeply integrated into their lives.4. Coaching classes and online tutors: Coaching classes have well adapted with the changing exam patterns. Most provide printed and multimedia educational content along with computerized mock tests. Printed texts and printed test papers are not as attractive with these alternatives.5. Piracy and rising paper costs: These two have been long standing challenges, which the publishing industry is still grappling with. | - |
