dc.description.abstractIn November 2016, the government of India announced a sweeping ‘demonetisation’ of the economy, invalidating billions of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes overnight. The primary reason, it said, was to crack down on so-called ‘black money’. Although the sudden ban sparked weeks of economic disruption, long queues at banks and even reports of several deaths, the government said it had achieved its objectives. According to officials, one of the main benefits of demonetisation would be to encourage the development of a cashless economy. The success of the demonetisation drive has been widely debated ever since.
