The shadow of future value distribution: Anticipating value misappropriation in multilateral innovation projects

Abstract

Future value creation among partners can only be drafted in the early phases of multilateral collaborative innovation, raising future value distribution concerns. Innovation ecosystems offer different consortia orchestrating innovation, in which future value appropriation by partners raises concerns at the earliest stages of innovation. This case study extends current understanding of value distribution and misappropriation by describing the two phases of a multilateral innovation process defined by a co-innovation consortium in aerospace, orchestrating a wider innovation ecosystem. The co-innovation consortium could not avoid problematic preferences arising from complementary but asymmetric roles and expertise in the innovation ecosystem.
