Abstract: After identifying some issues with material handling and movement in coil yard where the final product wire rod coils are stored, few possible ways to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the logistics operations were suggested. The following are some of the feasible ways to achieve logistics as core competence: • Improve coordination; achieve effective, accurate and timely flow of information among all the dept. involved with logistics viz., production, marketing, purchase etc. • Build strategic partnership with associated distributors and intermediate industrial consumers- done by sales dept. but the knowledge can be shared with logistics dept. • 'Change proofing'- building flexible capabilities through organizational learning, knowledge and information sharing among the individuals of various departments involved • Man power management in terms of nurturing dedicated personnel and improving their skill set; impart the training required, check attrition. • Yard management- empower the employees to find ways to improve yard functionality • Employ logistics contingency planning to tackle sudden disruptions, emergency shipping etc. • "what gets measured gets managed"- so start measuring to start managing effectively • Knowledge management through codification and personalization by giving right incentive to the participants • Logistics is an evolutionary process. As learning increases the time taken to do a particular job decreases with decreasing rate. So it important to encourage learning.
