Assessment of potential of carbon capture and storage in India; SIEMENS

Abstract

My internship started on 29 Mar' 2010 (Monday) when I reported at SISL (Siemens Information Systems Ltd) facility of Siemens located in Electronic City, Bangalore. I reported to the HR department of the company located at first floor, new building. There were some formalities e.g. filling forms and signing some documents, opening an HDFC account and submitting documents related to education and past experience. In second half I reported to my department which was situated at fifth floor. Corporate technology is the division which mostly concentrates on developing newer technologies. There are different sections with in this department where I was working with Strategic planning & Business Development. I was introduced with one of the business research analyst working in this function and then I met with associate vice president. They were not having any specific project in mind for me so I was given the freedom of selecting my project myself. I talked with several area experts within the company who suggested me to work on many excellent projects which ranged from algae technologies to power transmission systems. I spent my first week thinking about my project, talking to experts with in Siemens and working on a small project on electric cars and prices of electricity in India in future~ While, J. ' was making up my mind 011' a project, I read about Copenhagen summit and stringent requirement of controlling the increase in temperature of global atmosphere. I had past experience with power generation which is the biggest source of 002 'emissioIlS' and this" always troubled me. I was thinking on lines how can this be taken care of. I opted to go for working on Carbon Capture & Storage concept and assessing what is the feasibility of this project in India. During my internship I discussed technologies, political environment. existing and future endeavors in the area with the professors and industry leaders of leading institute of India and world. I searched for reports on internet which were widely available and read political environment by reading the point of views expressed in Copenhagen summit. This was a research on assessing the potential of this technology in India. I got in touch with European Climate Exchange, A consulting firm in Nigeria, scholars of subject CCS (Carbon Capture & Storage) in European institute, Professors of lIM Ahmedabad and Lueknow, IISC Bangalore Professors and lIT Professors to get to know the latest development in Indian environment. What are the steps taken by Indian government to develop the concept in India. A comprehensive research which is supported by my mentor and encouraged by colleagues made me excited to explore the area further. The colleagues are helpful. The company has an open culture of learning and sharing. Experts are ready to help you and ready to learn from you too. The company is a pool of very high talented individuals in diverse background and areas ready to support and provide their inputs to your work. I took an interview of an individual who was working in Germany on the subject CCS. The topic provided me great insight in the fight the world is fighting again global warming. The most of research material was sought from internet search, email exchanges from European climate exchange, telephonic conversation with some of the scientist and professors and emails from eminent faculties in this area. Most of the part of internship was collecting and extensive reading of available data, verifying the data with several other reports or live discussions and then analyze the data in Indian context. I made a presentation in the last which was well appreciated and submitted a report on my analysis and recommendations. I mixed up the opportunity of CCS with carbon credits that can be earned and how a self sustainable business model can be created. The facilities which were provided to me during internship were canteen facility and transportation facility. It was a good experience to interact with individuals who are continuously thinking on the lines of global warming and loved a diverse open learning culture environment.
