Software: A Sector study; Export Import Bank of India, Bombay

Abstract

The Indian software industry has been growing rapidly at a compound growth rate of around 36.83% per year during 1985- 86 to 1990-91. Exports have also kept pace and grown at around 49.04% p.a. during the same period. The domestic turnover by contrast grew sluggishly at the compound rate of 28.01% during the same period. The total turnover of this industry during 1990-91 was Rs. 470 crores (exports Rs. 250 crores). This turnover does not take into account the large amount of in-house software development effort within user corporations (EDP departments) and the software sales by hardware companies. The value of the inhouse software development effort alone is estimated at around Rs. 500 crores per year.
