Ranbaxy’s diagnostic division is exploring the possibility of setting up a REFERENCE laboratory either at Bangalore or Delhi which will be supported by feeder labs at other major cities (such as Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Hyderabad). For this purpose, they are contemplating a joint venture with Specialty Laboratories, inc. a U.S company reputed to be a world leader in the area of clinical diagnostics. Specialty Labs has expertise in about 500 tests, many of which are highly specialized. Testing of such a high degree of specialization will revolutionize clinical diagnostics in India. However, because of the disease profile in India, not all these tests are likely to be relevant to Indian conditions, and therefore, there is a need for determining those tests most suitable to the Indian patient.
