Abstract: The concept of office interior - designing came to India only in 80's, when Indian corporate scenario started undergoing changes towards professionalism. Various corporations are becoming interested in scientific space designing and image development. Corporate identity and exclusiveness has become & part of company ethic and client servicing and the workplace ambience is assumed to play an important role in this, hence the market for Office Interior designing and furnishing is growing tremendously qualitatively as well as quantitatively despite increasing cost per square feet of layout. With the advent of 80‘s not only the multinationals but even the government offices and institutions (including NGOs and nonprofitable organisations) became interior conscious. As a result, emphasis on aesthetics, functionality, flexibility, safety and sales-service increased in order to make the environment more work inducive and customer friendly as well as to take care of considerations like space optimisation, ergonomics, manufacturing/ erection time, installation/ maintenance cost, range and quality of furnishings, degree of sophistication and customisation etc. To optimally fulfill all these requirements a new interior design concept came into being, known as “OPEN PLAN OFFICE INTERIOR’ characterised by partitions, cantilevered work seats and other accessories, all with a high degree of modularity. An infinite range of end product could be developed by interior decorators depending on time and cost constraints as well as customer requirements.
