Abstract: The hotel industry occupies a premier position in the industrial map of the country and enjoys a focus with the government as it earns almost 8% of the total foreign exchange earnings of the country. The fortunes of the industry are closely linked to the rate of tourist inflows into India. However when one considers that the total tourist flow for the entire globe as a whole is 400 million, the number of tourists arriving in India looks minuscule indeed, though it has grown from 17,000 in 1951 to around 1.8 million. Another vital statistic shows that while the world earns a total of $250, 000 million, India gets only 0.4% of that inspite of its vast potential for exotic as well as domestic tourism. AS such the government sees immense potential in this area.
