dc.description.abstract | The “Philips Company” was established, more than a hundred years ago, in 189] in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Important Philips’ Group companies and nonconsolidated companies are established in more than 65 countries across the world. Philips commenced its activities in India in 1930 at Calcutta as ‘Philips Electrical Co. (India) Pvt. Ltd.’, a sales company with a staff of 75 and a turnover of Rs 6 lakhs. Since then the company has grown continuously. Before September 1993, ‘PHILIPS INDIA LTD’ was called ‘PEICO ELECTRONICS & ELECTRICALS LTD’, when N.V.Philips’ Gloeilampenfabrieken, the parent company increased its shares from 39.7% to 51%. Initially Philips India was operating in a very protected environment in India as there wasn’t any big player to match them. Consequently, the performance of Philips India worsened with time and it even made losses in 1989. At that time they awakened and started the efforts to improve. In 1990 they did come out of red, but still there was a long way to go. Since 1991 the company has started the process of revitalizing and restructuring the whole organisation. This had become even more important in the view of India’s changing economic policies and the well justified, real threat of entry of other big players like Sony, GE etc. in the various product groups of Philips. Most of the restructuring has been done, but stil] the efforts to be more proactive, flexible and fast are going on. The company is trying to become more market oriented and trying to give the customer the first priority. In 1994 it crossed the Rs 1000 crore turnover mark which it was planning to achieve by 1995. Between 1992 and 1994 all manufacturing units got the ISO 9000 certification. Presently India is being considered as the key country by the Philips N V (the parent company) whereas in 1989 Peico’s turnover amounted to only 1% of the turnover of the whole group, and even closing down of their operations in India was under consideration. | |
