The lighting industry is broadly classified into the trade market and Commercial and Institutional lighting market. The former consists of GLS,FTL end accessories like. choke, palti, starter etc. The latter consists of luminaires, reflectors étc: anid. mainly cater to the industrial lighting segment and street illumination segment, The industry as a whole is poised for a growth of 10 _ 12%. The major players in the market are Philips, Crompton Greaves, Bajaj and Wipro. The government has reserved the luminaire manufacturing to the small scale industry. Because of this, the luminaire industry catering to the C&I section has a large number of small scale manufacturers. As a result ,the lighting industry has to depend on the small scale units for the luminaires being used in the design. Thus vendor development has become an integral part of the industry. All the large scale players are dependent on these units and infact some of the vendors are catering to more than one player. The manufacturing process is very much labour intensive with very limited automation. The small scale manufacturers,in addition to selling to the large players, also do business under their own brand name leading to a highly competitive market which is characterised by significant price’ varialions amongst the two ends of the market. The small scale sector accounts for almost 20% of the industrial sales. | URI: | https://repository.iimb.ac.in/handle/2074/17471 |
