Abstract: Instrument cooling fans are used for cooling various electrical / electronic equipments. They are upto 6 inches in size and come in both AC & DC varieties. Crompton Greaves Ltd., a leading name in the fan industry, was interested in entering this market provided after a techno-economically feasibility study. As a starting point in this exercise, I had to estimate the national demand for these fans, preferably with size break-up. The sales figures for the last few years along with the list of addresses of the major players were obtained from published data. A list of the various applications were . prepared for these fans. Detailed questionnaires were prepared and various users were contacted in Bombay (personally) and outside (by fascimile). Demand estimates as well as future forecasts were obtained for each of the applications such as DC drives, photo copiers, computers, printers and so on. : The Control, Instrumentation & Industrial electronics area mainly requires 3.5 / 4 inch AC fans. The Communication & Broadcast equipment area also uses this type though the demand is declining. Computers require both the 1.5 inch DC fans (for CPU cooling) as well as the 3 inch DC fans ( as part of the power supply unit & also for cabinet cooling). In fact computers are the single largest users of these cooling fans. The estimates and the forecasts also considered the presence of the grey market. Printers mainly use the 2 / 2.5 inch DC fans.
