dc.description.abstract | In this study, we have looked at the framework on Climate Change under UN, the UNFCCC. We have analyzed various protocols agreed upon by the member countries and their obligations. We have also noted that India needs Coal for power generation – coal being the cheapest method to produce electricity and also in terms of energy security that arises from domestic production. Apart from India, China and US are also dependent on Coal for electricity generation. We have attempted to list down the strategies employed by US and China for complying with UNFCCC emission norms. We have also noted that Coal Energy is a Game that is being played by developing countries like India, China, Brazil, South Africa on one side, European countries with substantial renewable energy investments on another, the US unwilling to cut its wasteful ways on another and finally the other countries as one block. Reports indicate that China is playing this game by developing solar energy equipment manufacturing capability in the country, taking subsidies from European countries under UNFCCC for developing this capability and then undercutting the US green energy industry by selling these products at a price that is below the cost of manufacturing in USA. We have also read reports that mention how US is subverting the UNFCCC framework to absolve itself of any responsibility. | |
