Indian logistics industry : Scope, shortcomings and strategies

Abstract

This study shall aim at developing suitable logistics strategy solutions to cater to the major Indian industries with emphasis on the special requirements at different points in the supply chain. "The health of any modern economy depends heavily on the state of its infrastructure, more particularly its ability to move finished and semi-finished factory products and farm produce both within and beyond its borders. A well-developed and integrated logistics industry, therefore is critical for a country to post and sustain healthy economic growth" The extent and intensity of this fact is so widespread in India that though the entire western world has surged ahead in the logistics and supply chain industry through modern technology and innovative solutions, most of them either have no scope in the Indian scenario or have been tested and failed. Through our project, we intend to address the very same issue by coming up with a feasible and appropriate end to end logistics solution for the Indian market. We intend to begin the project by exploring the scope of the logistics Industry in India. Apart from a few niche players, the country lacks a proper integrated end to end logistics player. This is also due the lack of various facilities in the country including infrastructure – warehouses, proper roads, connectivity, distribution centers, etc. We will also be comparing the efficiency of the Indian logistics sector with those in other countries with similar demographics and supply needs. This will be followed by a focused study of the various major industries in India like FMCG, Auto etc. which have significant logistics requirements and whose logistics requirements are different in different points in the supply chain. We will be studying the current state of the logistics services being used by the major players in these industries in terms of the contracts, the geographical scope and special services like cold supply chain.
