dc.description.abstract | The document is an attempt to understand the basic problem in the last mile connectivity in the public transport system and that is the pedestrian infrastructure. The study has been articulated with the ground reporting along with people’s perception survey about the missing links of the pedestrian facility. The study addresses in finding out the gap in the policy formulation and the execution on the ground. The policies are made to follow certain mission and to mitigate the possible hardship to the citizen and provide a standard norms to follow everywhere across the India. The urban mobility has been tremendously been seen changing due to increased pressure of the urbanization. The basic facility in the terms of the mobility of mass is required to be seen on the sustainability and the safety point of view along with the comfort and convenience and over all time and fuel saving. The road development in the India has seen the significant improvement with the national level programs of improvement of the carriage ways through NHDP, PMGSY, and JLNNRUM etc. such developments has increased the average speed of the vehicular transportation in almost all part of the cities specially neighborhoods, school areas and main arteries have led to increased accidents and reduced the safety to pedestrians. The conflicts of the pedestrian with the motorized vehicle have further increased due to poor infrastructure facilities leading them exposed to danger. On an average one death occurs per day due to accidents; with pedestrians figuring in 38% of the road accident deaths in Bangalore and 279 deaths alone in the year 2019 highest among any Indian cities is alarming. The higher percentage of the pedestrian death has directed correlation with the poor pedestrian infrastructure facilities in metropolitan regions. The study has been an attempt to understand the possible causes and recommendation on the possible changes required to tweak upon the existing setting for the better built environment. The study comprises the perception survey and the site visit of the neighborhood Indira Nagar to understand the significance of the problem and to facilitate the frame work for addressing the problem. The Proper design and planning of the roads/ footpath, proper Coordination among the executive agencies, Enforcement against the encroachments and illegal parking, Capacity building through footpath, zebra crossing, proper signal system and FOBs, Creating a social sensitization and awareness has been identified as the most significant vectors of the framework designed to address the issue of the increased pedestrian deaths in the metropolitan regions. The documents will conclusive remark of the set of recommendation and steps for moving in way forward in enhancing the pedestrian infrastructure for achieve the safe comfortable and pleasing mobility for everyone. | |
