dc.description.abstract“Fashion a term generally used for a popular style or practice. Fashion on a broader sense covers clothing/apparel, footwear, accessories, bags, makeup, or furniture.” In the analysis of fashion industry in India further, we have covered only clothing/apparel part. The Indian textiles industry is one of the largest organised industries in the country with respect to employment and number of operational units. An apparel is defined as garment that is ready to wear. Apparels can be categorized into menswear, womenswear and kids wear. All of this includes shirts, trousers, t-shirts, jeans, women’s dresses (churidars, kurtas, salwar-kameez, etc), hosiery items (socks) and innerwear etc. The apparel industry in India is highly fragmented in nature. Apparel manufacturing is the final link in the textile value chain;it is also least capital-intensive. The Indian apparel industry is growing at a very healthy pace. India’s exports are also growing thanks to phasing out of Multi Fibre Agreement. In our analysis of the Indian fashion Industry, we broadly divided the market based on the gender, age group and came across three segments Men, Women and Kids. We further divided Men and Women segments into major categories like formal wear, casual wear, ethnic wear ( The description of each category is provided in that individual segment). Under casual wear category we considered the sub category of Jeans, since it is one of the casual forms of clothing. It is the most popular and frequently used and this has led to the emergence of many players particularly specialising into jeans category. Further we have also described about two special categories in women’s segment; lingerie and maternity wear. We have also analysed few major brands in sportswear and prominent Indian fashion designers under the category called others.
