The current population of India is estimated to be 136.6 crores. Although the statement by M.K. Gandhi “The soul of India lives in its villages” was in connection to the freedom struggle, current statistics and surveys indicates that 65.53% of the population still lives in rural areas. In terms of absolute numbers, this is about 89.15 crore rural population compared to 47.08 crore urban population. Hence, there is a need to focus on access to public resources for the rural population.
