dc.description.abstract | During the conduction of a round robin tournament, each team is supposed to face every other team at least once. While it is known that you as a team would have to face every other team, the order of facing them is randomly generated. In this scenario, the actual points table need not necessarily reflect a team’s position in the long run, as on a given day, each team would be facing teams of different strengths. For example, in the World Cup conducted in 2019, New Zealand was a surprise table topper through the 1st 4 rounds, but that was because the teams they had faced were Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, which were amongst the lowest ranked teams in the tournament. Other teams, meanwhile, had faced stronger opposition and therefore languished below. However, in the presence of a framework which would take into account the strength of the opposition being faced and provide the points accordingly the standings would be a lot different | |
