While the various governments have focused on rural development, the process can be made effective if a few villages across states are chosen to become Adarsh villages for the others to emulate. Such Adarsh villages exist and are exceptional because the leadership and the people of these villages have done activities beyond the government initiatives. According to the Prime Minister, many existing government schemes often work in isolation, and this nation-wide approach to building Adarsh villages will help identify and resolve the bottlenecks of these isolated schemes. Since rural development is enhanced when people are directly involved, a scheme such as Adarsh gram yojana which envisages leadership and people involvement, in the long run, will help improve the status of the 621,000 villages that form the bedrock of the Indian society. As of now, development in most villages are supply-oriented. The Adarsh Gram Yojana aims to make village development 1) demand-driven 2) inspired by society and 3) based on people’s participation. By involving the politicians (MPs) directly into the process, this scheme may also lead to good and participatory politics at the ground level, in the country. | URI: | https://repository.iimb.ac.in/handle/2074/20385 |
