Abstract: Bengaluru which lies in the southern part of Karnataka is the 5th largest metropolis in India. It has population of 9,588,910 of whom 91% are urban residents. It has sex ratio of 908 females for every 1000 males and a literacy rate of 84%. It is a knowledge hub which houses premier institutions like IISc, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, ISRO, IIM, National Institute for Advanced Studies. It is also known as the Silicon city of India. And due to its parks, greenery and tree lined streets, also known as Garden City of India. Bangalore was ranked 2nd among all the districts in the country with respect to the availability of health facilities after Chennai. With professional experts, technological superiority and best health care services, Bangalore is also one of the top medical tourism destinations in the country. It has some of the best doctors and medical practitioners in the world who were well trained in India and abroad. All the medical practitioners are registered with Indian Medical Association as well as other professional bodies and most of the hospitals have the international accreditations. The leading institutions and private hospitals in Bangalore include – Apollo, Fortis, Columbia Asia, HCG, Mallya Hospital, Hosmat, Recoup, Manipal, Narayana Hrudalaya, Wockhardt, Advanced fertility centre, Soukya, NIMHANS, Sagar Apollo, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, St. John’s Hospital, St. Martha’s, Victoria Hospital, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, , Manipal Hospital and The Bangalore Hospital. The popular specializations include - Cardiology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Dentistry, Nephrology, Neurology, Oncology, Infertility, Gynaecology, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Karnataka has about 91,461 registered allopathic doctors in 2011, with 4298 in public health system and the remaining in the private system. Including the private practitioner, it has a physician-patient ratio of 1:641(CBHI, 2011). Karnataka has a healthy nurse-patient ratio of 3.25 per 1000 population better the norms. Karnataka has about 293 hospitals of which 176 are government owned. It has about 1297 primary health centers, 622 primary health dispensaries, 7793 sub-centres and over 50,000 beds A ten year master plan is developed by KSTDC to develop a medical hub near BIAL. It is planning to develop a medical hub in 300 acres using Public-Private Partnership model which will have 200 beds. Narayana Hrudayalaya is developing a hospital near airport on 35 acres of land. Apollo also sought 15 acres to build a medical tourism facility. Fire Capital, a private equity firm, is to invest in real state to build a 300 bed hospital in Bangalore. Switzerland’s Smile Dental Clinics have tied up with Global Tech Park to set up dental clinic with USA $300 Mb.
