India’s trade relations with Israel have had a deep-rooted history. However, the evolution of this trade camaraderie has witnessed a chequered evolution since the independence of both the nations. By 1948, owing to circumstances during India’s pre-independence period, trade relations with the Arab world were very strong. The major items exchanged included gems, garments, jewelry, petrol, chemicals and other engineered items. In fact the cooperation was very strong even on the technological front and a close-knit relationship with the Arab world was one of the major reasons why initiatives to foster a similar relationship with Israel were considered to be against the Indian interest.
