Abstract: The millennium summit which took place at the start of the Millennium was a platform for the United Nations to discuss its role in the 21st century. The world leaders accepted the United Nations Millennium Declaration and thus the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) came into picture. In the summit, a total of 189 nations took an oath to liberate the people form the evils of extreme poverty and multiple other deprivations in 2000. This translated into the declaration of eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which were slated to be achieved by 2015. MDGs influenced the various development policies, their formulation and their planning.
