Abstract: The Business Groups have dominated the landscape of most of the emerging market economies. They have been devised as a mechanism to counter the institutional voids. However, many of the emerging markets have matured over time changing the rules of the game. Will the business groups with their diversification strategy be able to survive the intense competitive landscape that is evolving, where core competency unlike the ability to handle institutional voids is going to be important? This report looks at one of the lesser studied business groups in India – United Breweries. The study aims at analysing the multi-business strategy of the United Breweries group and coming up with suggestions on the probable industries the UB group should expand. The study was conducted in three stages; the first stage consisted of conducting secondary research about the company. The research focused on all the group companies. The second stage consisted of looking at the literatures available on the various strategies and structures associated with an emerging market like India. The third stage involved connecting the two and coming up with insights which can be used to recommend the future strategies for the UB group.
