Abstract: Academic based Al research has been in India since long, with course being taught as early as 1960’s in HT Kanpur followed by Knowledge based computing system (KBCS) in 1986. The Al research in India has reached new milestones, India is 3rd globally in terms no of citable research articles and India comes 5th globally in no of Al based research cited. Majority of the fundamental research in India in AI is being driven by centres of excellence in various premiers institutes such IIT Delhi, IT Bombay etc many of these research albs have been in association with pat sector companies such as Infosys, IBM, etc. Major focus of Indian research is in the sub-verticals of sensing (document analysis & computer vision), Natural Language Processing, probabilistic decision making.
