dc.description.abstract | The real estate industry is one of the largest sectors in India. It is the second largest employer after agriculture for the country. It was also 4'" largest sector in the country in terms of FDI. The real sector currently contributes about 6.5-7% of the GDP, and this is expected to go upto 13% of the GDP by 2025. The sector further comprises of four sub-sectors: housing, commercial, retail and hospitality. The real estate sector in India has seen a lot of changes in the last 5 years. There have been new regulations such as RERA (Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act), economic changes in liquidity through events such as demonetization and taxation changes such as through GST implementation. All these led to a stagnation of the industry for a while and coupled with the NBFC crisis it resulted in a lot ofNPAs and bad debt. As soon as the markets started stabilizing around late 2019, the country was hit with strict lockdowns due to the COVID pandemic in early 2020. This further delayed the industry from reviving. | |
