The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, as an escalation of the larger Russo-Ukrainian war which has been going on since 2014. The invasion has resulted in lakhs of casualties on both sides and has also displaced millions of people both within Ukraine as wel l as f leeing therefrom. Coupled with a further mass exodus of a mil lion people from Russia itself, the invasion has essential ly precipitated one of the largest refugee crises Europe has faced post World War II. It has also resulted in a global food crisis and compounded the already ongoing global energy crisis which began post COVID-19. The invasion has been vehemently condemned on the international stage. The United Nations passed a resolution demanding the Russia's withdrawal from Ukraine, while the International Court of Justice demanded that Russia cease its military operations w ith immediate effect. Russia was also debarred from the Council of Europe. In March 2022, the International Criminal Court (ICC) began to investigate the occurrence of crimes against humanity in the Ukraine conflict since 2013.
