The metropolitan cities of India are its nerve centers and are the economic engines of the country. The economic activity of the metropolitan cities is significantly contingent upon the efficiency of its (i) transportation, (ii) housing and (iii) water supply and sanitation sectors. Hence, for the metropolitan cities to continue generating economic wealth, it is important that the above three facilities are provided in an efficient and cost effective manner. However, due to myopia on part of the policy makers, the three sectors have not been able to holistically develop to the extent possible. The same has lead to problems of lack of coordination, absence of a common view point and wastage of resources. This has not only affected the development of metropolitan centers but has also caused impediments in the economic growth of the country. Consequently, a crying need has been felt for better coordination amongst the three sectors of urban infrastructure of metros so that the metros may continue to be the engines of economic growth. The paper has analyzed the infrastructure related problems that the metros are facing. The problems are basically due to migration of people from the various hinterland towns and also due to the growth in economic opportunities in the metropolitan cities. Thereafter the paper has suggested the formation of a unified Urban Infrastructure Board (UIB) that shall act as a supra body over the functioning the transportation, housing and water supply and sanitation sectors of the metropolitan cities of India. The form and structure of the UIB along with its powers has been elaborated upon. It is expected that with the formation of the UIB, a majority of the problems can be solved and the metros of India can continue to generate economic value for the entire country. The paper has been developed through primary research (an online survey), secondary research and interaction with the town planning department of the BBMP.
