The Printers (Mysore ) Limited is the leading publishers of daily newspaper & Magazines. Deccan Herald the English daily & Prajavani the kannada daily. Sudha & Mayura , the weekly & monthly magazines. Both Deccan Herald & Prajavani dailies being the regional newspaper which is being published only in Karnataka state, enjoys the highest circulation & readership and maintains No 1 position in the state. The objective of the project is a planned strategy for wastage control in newsprint and to increase productivity & enhance quality in our organisation. Since newsprint is the most important and expensive raw material, any savings in newsprint consumption results in direct savings and contributes in profitability. The main purpose of the waste reducing programmes is to save money, the marginal value of the rupee saved is much greater than the marginal value of a rupee earned. Savings directly contribute to profitability whereas earnings require investments. From this project study it is found that approximately 18,000 tonnes of newsprint is consumed per annum and the percentage of waste is averaging around 8%. If 1% of reduction in operating waste is achieved by implementing " WASTE SA VING PROGRAMME " in our organisation , corresponding savings amount to 180 tonnes or L80M00 Kgs or nearly 3.5 million rupees. This is a clear enough incentive, made all the more so bearing in mind that these financial savings can greatly increase the profits of our organisation, otherwise the same profits can be obtained only by substantial increase in production & sales volume. The most important part of saving program is collection of data and analysis of the past data. It must be emphasised to set achievable targets depending on existing technical skills and systematic approach should be adopted in identifying the problems areas were waste can be minimised within the limitations of the setup and the need for proper usage of newsprint to reduce operating cost. The white peel waste can be completely avoided if the newsprint is transported using containers without involving multiple handling at various stages of its journey. By utilising the newsprint till the end it is possible to reduce "reel end waste" to a great extent. The implementation of this project will result in eliminating controllable waste from the present 8% . It does not only save newsprint but other direct & indirect cost involved , like administration cost, transportation cost, handling cost, Insurance cost & storage cost for the newsprint saved.en_US
